Gunung Kawi Cliff Temple.

Gunung Kawi Cliff Temple, is a protected ancient relic located in Panaka Village, Tampaksiring and is on the Pakerisan river route. As the name suggests, Gunung means Mountain, and Kawi means Sculpture. This temple is estimated to have been built in the 11th century AD, during the reign of King Udayana to Anak Wungsu, who is also a known king from the Warmadewa dynasty who through his marriage to a Javanese princess named Gunapriya Dharma Patni gave birth to two sons, namely Erlangga who became king in East Java and the youngest son who ruled in Bali. One of the archaeological evidences to strengthen this assumption is that there is an inscription above the pseudo door that uses the Kediri letter which reads “haji lumah ing jalu” which means the King (symbolically) is buried in Jalu. The king in question is King Udayana, the word Jalu which is a designation for spurs (kris / weapons) on a rooster can also be interpreted as Pakerisan. The name of the Pakerisan river is what divides the two cliffs of the temple into 2 parts. This temple was discovered by Dutch researchers around 1920. To reach right at the entrance of this temple, it is not easy because you will go through 315 steps made of solid stone and framed with stone walls. The river water is so clear and there are also many springs in this location which is divided into 2 temple complexes in the west and east which are also equipped with showers as baths. To make it clearer for those of you who want to visit, we recommend looking for the right reference and also a guide who understands well so that there are no mistakes in the delivery of history.
